Become Dazzled By The Cody Rivers Show
by Libby Chenault
For
the past six months, devoted fans have been gathering
at iDiOM Theater for the two-person sketch comedy
phenomenon known as The Cody Rivers Show. Written
and performed by Mike
Mathieu and Andrew Connor, it’s
a sensational hour of theater, music, and dance,
and it’s one of-a-kind. The duo has an original
sense of humor that avoids easy targets like pop
stars and presidents, choosing instead to create
fantastic realities that transcend the familiar.
Connor
and Mathieu throw themselves into a variety of
vivid characters so convincingly they seem like
a cast of ten, not two. Clever audio and choreographed
scene changes make the transitions part of the
performance, so the action never stops. The actors’ energy
pulls the audience into their world and sometimes
quite literally onto the stage.
And then
there’s the dancing. Broadway, yoga,
and MTV come together in unforgettable, high-energy
sequences. Add to that seemingly self-animated
props, guitars, slow- motion combat and ill-fitting
wigs, and the result is simply dazzling.
The Cody
Rivers Show performs regularly at iDiOM Theater,
and irregularly at other venues in the area. Check
it out. Become dazzled.
Libby Chenault lives in Bellingham where she supports
and participates in the local arts scene.
